Movies coming up at the Hall

The Eaglehawk Neck Film Society screening this month, on Saturday 9 June at 7.00pm, will be The Post (M 116 minutes).  Directed by Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The BFG), it tells the true story of the Washington Post’s decision in the 1970s to publish what became known as the Pentagon Papers, the cover-up by the administrations of four US Presidents of their country’s real involvement in the Vietnam war. Starring Meryl Streep as Post owner/publisher Kay Graham and Tom Hanks as editor Ben Bradlee.  Nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress Oscars.

On Saturday 14 July at 7.00pm the film society will be screening the Oscar nominated film Call Me By Your Name (M 132 minutes).  Set in the beautiful countryside of northern Italy in the summer of 1983, and based on the acclaimed novel by Andre Aciman, this is the coming-of-age story of 17-year-old Elio and his relationship with his anthropologist father’s new research assistant.  Nominated for four Oscars, including best picture and actor.

Hot food and snacks are served at 6.00pm prior to the Saturday evening screenings.

Also, on Thursday 5th July at 6.30pm the Wilderness Society will be hosting a screening at the Hall of the 1987 Tasmanian ‘classic’ The Tale of Ruby Rose (PG rated, 135 min), as part of a tour of the film around Tasmania to mark the 30th anniversary of its production.  Filmed in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park in winter.  This was writer/director Roger Scholes’ first feature film.  It won four awards at the Venice Biennale in 1987 and has since been digitally remastered. Wilderness Society members will present the film and discuss some of the challenges to the breathtaking wilderness areas presented on screen.
