” Thank you and photos. “

What a long weekend! The Pirates of PIrates Bay Bicentennial Commemoration Weekend – the like of which hasn’t been seen at Eaglehawk Neck for a very long time.

An event or three to interest everyone! The letter box and house decorating competition produced inventive and colourful displays.

Mayor Kelly Spaulding opened the proceedings with a Welcome to Country.
He then announced the Australia Day awards. Community members baked scones and a delicious Devonshire tea was served after the Opening.
The afternoon tea was followed by history presentations made to a full house. Fascinating and true stories of convicts and free settlers in the early 1800s were told by four local historians.
The stories included the wild tale of the pirates who stole the Seaflower and gave Pirates Bay its name.

There was a full house attendance again for the performances on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon of The Pirates, The Unknown Cannibals And The Man Who Changed His Feathers.
The play, co-written by Daniela Brozek, James Parker and Sue Benner was an absolute blast with a brilliant script, singing, dancing and much fun. Local musician Ali Hart provided a stirring musical score.
Local actors trod the boards in the large marquee borrowed from the Koonya Garlic Festival Committee.

The Lufra Hotel hosted the Pirate’s Ball on Saturday night. People arrived in spectacular Pirate costumes, downed rum cocktails, and danced to live band, Barrelhouse, outside under the marquee until late.
A tasty supper was provided by the Lufra Hotel.

The Sunday Pirate’s Market saw hundreds of people coming and going throughout the day.
Many were costumed and attendees took full advantage of the well-stocked stalls and food outlets.
Other activities included a local history display in the Hall, a Children’s Treasure Hunt and live entertainment by Michelle Pears, free rum balls, a live mermaid, wooden boat display and a real Pirate Parrot.

” It was a great success! “

We would like to thank a number of people and organisations.

Thank you everyone for being part of the weekend, and for all the fantastic feedback we have received after the event. It takes a whole community to make such a successful event.

We, the Co-Creators, of this Pirates of Pirates Bay Celebration, have enjoyed, and were inspired by, the growing enthusiasm and community spirit over the ten months of planning.

Due to the success of the pirate weekend activities, there is talk of ‘Pirates Bay Day’ celebrations becoming a regular event! If you missed the fun don’t worry the pirates may just be in the bay again next January!
